Toyota 5A-F/FE/FHE engine reliability, problems and repair

The Toyota 5A engine appeared in 1987. It as a younger type of the 4A and 7A engines. In that motor the cylinder diameter was diminished to 78.7 mm, so we got a displacement of 1.5-liter. The diameter of the throttle body was 45 mm. But, the 4A-F/FE/FHE engine remained the same with all its pros and cons. It was a common industrial engine, as far as the sport 5A-GE and 5A-GZE types were not available.
Engine is equipped with toothed timing belt. In average timing belt and roller replacement is necessary after every 60,000 miles (100,000 km) of mileage.
The more advanced and producible Toyota 1NZ engines became the descendants of the 5A engines.

Toyota 5A engine modifications and differences

1. 5A-F (1987 – 1990) is a model with a carburetor fuel injection system, which is similar to the 4A-F with a diminished displacement. Its compression ratio is 9.8, its capacity is about 85 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. and its torque is 122 Nm (90 lb•ft) at 3,600 rpm.
2. 5A-FE (1987 – 2006) is similar to the 4A-FE. The motor is a typical 5A-F electronic fuel injection with a compression ratio of 9.6, capacity of 105 HP at 6,000 rpm, and a torque of 131 Nm (97 lb•ft) at 4,800 rpm. After the motor production at the Toyota plants was stopped, that engine was passed to the company FAW. At present its vehicles are equipped with that engine.
3. 5A-FHE (1989 – 1999) is a model with a modified cylinder head, other camshafts, a little bit modified inlet system and new exhaust manifold. The 5A-FHE capacity has risen to 120 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. with a torque of 132 Nm (97 lb•ft) at 4,800 rpm. The engine was installed in the vehicles designed for the domestic Japanese market.

Like the 7A, that engine cannot show any serious results in a naturally aspirated tuning.  It can be possible to make the diameters of the cylinders longer, up to 81 mm and fit them to the 4A-FE pistons. Doing that will help you to copy the 4A. Though, doing such things, you can encounter with the moulding shortcomings and spoil a cylinder block.

5A-FE Turbo. 5A-FTE

The Toyota 5A-FE engine was not designed for races and sports. That’s why, it will be necessary to replace the most stock internals, in order to assemble a good 5A Turbo. It is the most reasonable for you to buy a 4A-FE turbokit of the smallest turbocharger and mount it on the stock pistons. Buy a Greddy E-manage and adjust it if you want everything to work all right. You will achieve a capacity of 150 horsepower.
A piece of advice for those who are itching to design the turbo constructions: buy a 4A-GZE, make a swap, and the motor will develop 300 hp.
