In 1999 a 2ZZ-GE sport engine appeared among ZZ-models. Yamaha engineers greatly contributed to the development of that engine. The main difference between the 2ZZ and 1ZZ is as follows: the 2ZZ got a composite cylinder block, crankshaft with a decreased piston stoke (85 mm), 82 mm pistons and increased compression ratio up to 11.5.
The 2ZZ-GE engine was added with a new variable valve timing and lift intelligent system VVTL-i. It strongly differs from the VVT-i model: after 6,200 rpm valve lifting increases and reaches not more than 11.2 mm/10.0 mm and the motor develops a capacity of 192 horsepower at 7,600 rpm. For some markets there are models with a decreased capacity of not less than 164-180 HP. Apart from that, a new 2ZZ exhaust manifold is applied. Its throttle body diameter is 76 mm. 2ZZ stock injectors are 310 cc (yellow one) and 330 cc (brown ones). An exhaust system, comparing with that of the 1ZZ, has diameter increased to 58 mm.
2ZZ-GE engines weren’t equipped with hydraulic lifters. Therefore, you will have to adjust the valves in each 100,000 km.
In addition to a naturally aspirated motor, supercharged models came into existence. The modifications possessing a capacity of 220 HP were equipped with an Eaton M45 supercharger at 3.5 psi (0.25 bar) pressure. The models having a capacity of 225 HP used the Eaton M62 supercharger at 4 psi (0.3 bar) pressure. As a result, possessing that type of supercharger, the 2ZZ-GE could develop 240 to 260 HP.
Apart from the 2ZZ engines, they also produced 1ZZ, 3ZZ and 4ZZ motors.
The supercharged 2ZZ engines were mounted only in Corolla and Lotus models.
Toyota 2ZZ engine problems and malfunctions
1. Oil is enormously consumed. This is the most common trouble after running 100,000 miles (150,000 km). To sort that out is as easy as ABC. You should do major repairs of the 2ZZ what ever unpleasant it might seem to be.
2. Knocking noise in the engine. The problem is similar to that, which is typical of the 1ZZ. If any, you should buy a brand new timing chain and replace that of you own. It must have strained.
3. If any rough idling, cleanse throttle body units and idle run valves. While doing that thing, you should check everything.
Besides that, the VVTL-i system needs servicing each 30,000 miles (50,000 km) of mileage. Without doing so, the system may come to a halt and decrease in its capacity can occur after working at 6,000 rpm. 2ZZ-GE engine lifespan resembles that of the 1ZZ and reaches about 120,000 miles (200,000 km) of mileage at average. Having reached such a rate of running, you will probably face a need of complete overhaul. Otherwise, you must purchase a new 2ZZ engine.
2ZZ-GE Turbo. 2ZZ-GTE
To assemble a good 2ZZ turbo can turn to be quite a costly and complicated thing. To construct a right 2ZZ-GTE engine, you need some Darton sleeves, forged Wiseco pistons with a compression ratio of 8.8 and stock connecting rods. You will have to replace the valves with lightweight ones, purchase Monkey Wrench Racing valve springs, enlarge the oil pan, Walbro 255 lph fuel pump, and 700 cc fuel injectors. For developing 400 HP, you need to get Crower connecting rods, 800 cc injectors, and increase boost pressure.
Bolting a supercharger on the 2ZZ is the simplest way of capacity increase. That also helps the automobile to remain fit for city operation. The leading companies, such as Blitz, Greddy and others, are engaged in designing bolt-on kits. You are only to purchase them and fit the stock pistons with them. At 7 psi (0.5 bar) pressure, your 2ZZ engine can easily perform at 250-260 horsepower.
N/A Tuning. Naturally aspirated
Without taking into consideration the fact that the 2ZZ-GE engine is highly forced, there is some backlog left for tuning. All you have to do is purchasing Monkey wrench racing camshafts fitted with springs, making a head porting, getting a DD Performance intake manifold, light valves, 90 mm hrottle body, 4-2-1 exhaust manifold, direct-flow exhaust system and ECU Apexi Power FC. When all the aftermarket parts adjusted, your engine will develop about 240-250 horsepower.
Besides, there are pistons fitted to increased compression ratio available at the market. That will allow further gaining the capacity.
