Toyota Corolla Rumion
The 2ZR engine was introduced in 2007 as a replacement for the popular 1ZZ motor. The new engine is an intermediate type in a Toyota ZR range. It is somewhere between a 1.6-liter 1ZR and 2-liter 3ZR.
The 2ZR differs from the 1ZR due to its new crankshaft with an increased piston stroke of up to 88.3 mm, similar connecting rods, pistons changed, and with a piston pin shifted.
The 2ZR is provided with a timing chain having a 8 mm chain pitch. Its life span is 90,000 miles (150,000 km) of mileage. Firing order in the 2ZR is 1-3-4-2.
Besides, the 2ZR is also provided with hybrid modifications operating by Atkinson cycle.
Toyota 2ZR engine modifications and differences
1. The 2ZR-FE model (2007 – present) is a basic engine having a 10 compression ratio. Its power varies from 128 HP to 134 HP. It is mounted in Toyota Allion, Corolla, Premio, Auris, Yaris, Matrix, Scion xD, Pontiac Vibe, and Lotus Elise.
2. The 2ZR-FAE type (2009 – present) resembles the 2ZR-FE. It is provided with a Valvematic valve elevation height control system. It is also equipped with modified pistons with its compression ratio risen up to 10.5. The power of the engine is 143 HP to 150 HP, depending on a modification. The 2ZR-FAE was used with Toyota Corolla, Auris, Avensis, Allion, Ist, Wish, Verso, and Premio.
3. The 2ZR-FXE engine (2010 – present) and the 2ZR-FE are alike. It is run in hybrid engine Toyotas operating by Atkinson cycle. Its compression ratio is heightened to 13, power is 136 horsepower at 5200 rpm, and torque is 142 Nm (105 lb•ft) at 4400 rpm. It is mounted in such vehicles as Toyota Prius, Lexus CT 200hm, and Toyota Auris.
Toyota 2ZR engine problems and malfunctions
The 2ZR motor strongly resembles the 1ZR type. They have common problems. They are typical of the entire ZR family. You can found some information on them HERE.
2ZR Turbo. 2ZR-FTE
Turbokits developed out of the Garrett GT2871R engines are specially designed for the 2ZR.
They are provided with a complete set including: a turbocharger, intercooler, manifold, all the pipings, blow-off, 550 cc injectors, cold air intake, all necessary filters, fuel pump, oil feed lines, oil return line, and an ECU. You only need to buy a 2ZR turbokit, bolt it on the stock internals and adjust it. If necessary, you should also buy a Greddy E-manage. The configuration will allow you to develop 200 horsepower, at pressure boosted to 7 psi (0.5 bar).
To gain capacity and heighten reliability, you will need to purchase forged pistons fitted to 8.5-9 compression ratio, reinforced connecting rods, make a performance exhaust system 3”, bolt the 800 cc injectors on, and increase boost pressure. All the aftermarket parts will help to achieve more than 350 horsepower.
It is possible if you have 1ZR and 3ZR engines.
