Toyota ZZ engines were introduced in 1998 with the aim of replacing the well-known, but pretty out-dated Toyota A engines. The first most wide-known ZZ engine was a 1ZZ motor. It replaced the 7A engine/4S engine. The 1ZZ possessed a new lightweight aluminium cylinder block with cast-iron cylinder sleeves. A different crankshaft, pistons and connecting rods go with that engine.
The cylinder head is made out of aluminium with a VVTi variable valve timing system on the inlet camshaft. Light valves are the engine’s essential part and the timing belt was replaced with a timing chain. All the 1ZZ stock injectors are 255 cc. The 1ZZ throttle body has a diameter of 54 mm.
The 1ZZ-FE engine is not equipped with hydraulic lifters, so you have to adjust the valves once per 60,000 miles(100,000 km) of mileage on your own.
In 1999 the following engines were developed out of the 1ZZ: a 2ZZ-GE sport type of motor, 1.6-liter – 3ZZ-FE and 1.4-liter 4ZZ-FE motors.
A new more advanced 2ZR-FE engine was introduced in 2007. It was the 2ZR-FE that replaced the 1ZZ-FE-model.
Toyota 1ZZ engine modifications and differences
1. The 1ZZ-FE motor was the main engine produced at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia. Its capacity is 120 to 140 HP.
2. The 1ZZ-FED type is similar to the 1ZZ-FE – model with lightweight rods. It was manufactured at Shimoyama Plant and has a capacity of 140 HP at 6,400 rpm with a torque of 171 Nm (126 ft•lb) at 4,200 rpm.
3. The 1ZZ-FBE – model is a modification of the 1ZZ-FE engine running on biofuel and exported to the market of Brazil.
Common problems and 1ZZ durability
1. High oil consumption. That problem is most commonly faced in 2002 engines. The main reasons resulting that are valve stem seals and piston rings. Do a major overhaul of the 1ZZ engine you will sort it out. The motors made after 2005 lack the above-described lack that disrepair.
2. Knocking noise inside the 1ZZ. As a rule, it is a stretch of the timing chain that makes troubles. It usually happens after running 100,000 miles (150,000 km) of mileage. In order to tackle the problem, you will have to replace the timing chain with a new one. If the timing chain is alright, one should check the belt tensioner.
3. If rough idling, you should clean the throttle body unit and idle air control valve.
4. If some vibration are heard in the 1ZZ, it’s normal. If any strong vibration, you should check the posterior mount of the engine.
Beside that, the 1ZZ is greatly exposed to overheat. That can easily result a loss of cylinder block shape and its malfunction. Check the cooling system regularly, use good engine oil and your 1ZZ-FE will serve you long and without any problems. The engine designed after 2005 will be the least troublesome.

You will have to buy such performance parts as a Toyota SC14 supercharger, intercooler, blow-off, cold air intake, 440 cc injectors, Walbro 255 lph fuel pump, ECU Greddy E-manage Ultimate. Having adjusted all those performance mods, you will get about 200 horsepower.
To device a 1ZZ-FTE-model, you will have to buy a turbokit designed of the Garrett GT28 engine, as well as a turbo manifold, downpipe 3”, midpipe, intercoller, 440 cc injectors, blow-off, Walbro 255 lph pump, and ECU Apexi Power FC. All those performance upgrades need mounting on the 1ZZ stock pistons at a boost pressure, which is not higher than 7 psi (0.5 bar).
By doing such a thing, your engine will be able to generate about 220-230 horsepower.
To get higher capacity, you will have to buy forged pistons at a compression ratio of 8.4, reinforced connecting rods and more highly-productive injectors (630+ cc). By means of the forged pistons, your motor will develop 300 HP.
You should buy Monkey Wrench Racing Stage 2 camshafts (duration 272 deg, lift 10 mm), cold air intake, and 4-2-1 exhaust manifold to gain the power of a naturally aspirated 1ZZ. After setting ECU, you will get additional 30 horsepower and design a more sport-like sort of the engine.
