Toyota 1FZ-FE engine reliability, problems and repair

In 1984, Toyota launched the 1FZ-F engine. It was supposed to replace the old 2F engine; the first car with 1FZ was a large SUV Land Cruiser 70. This engine is the Toyota’s largest straight-6 engine. Its engine block is cast iron; its cylinder bore size is 100 mm and a stroke is 95 mm.
For this engine, a new DOHC cylinder head was developed, with 4 valves per cylinder. 1FZ does not use hydraulic lifters, but you do not need to adjust the valve clearances too often. It should be done approximately every 60,000 miles of mileage (100,000 km). Valves clearances (in the cold engine): intake – 0.15 – 0.25 mm, exhaust –0.25 – 0.35 mm. The intake camshaft is driven by a single-row timing chain.
The earliest 1FZ models used carburetor fuel system and they were called 1FZ-F.
In 1993, the engine version with multi point fuel injection was introduced, with the new intake system, modified intake manifold, and the increased compression ratio of 9. This engine was named 1FZ-FE and it replaced the old 3F-E.
Since 1998, the ignition distributor was removed from 1FZ-FE and this engine started to feature the ignition coil. The firing order for the 1FZ-FE engines is 1-5-3-6-2-4.
The manufacturing of 1FZ-FE engine lasted until 2007, but in the last years it was being actively replaced by 2UZ.

Toyota 1FZ engine problems and malfunctions

The 1FZ engine is really simple, reliable and durable, as well as many Toyota engines of 80-90s. Its design has no faults or flaws. Therefore, you just need to maintain it regularly and use a good engine oil, then 1FZ-FE lifespan would be more than 250,000 miles of mileage (400,000 km).
The only drawback of 1FZ is fuel consumption… You need to prepare a lot of money on fuel. For the rest, it’s a great engine with a really high torque.

1FZ Turbo. Supercharger

You should not buy headers and other performance parts for 1FZ, this engine does not like high RPM, it is well suited for boost. Therefore, the most reasonable decision is to buy 1FZ-FE turbo kit or a supercharger kit.
On ebay, you can easily find a lot of Chinese turbo kits for this engine. Most likely, it would be not a very good, but at least cheap solution. You just need to buy one of these kits and put it on 1FZ stock internals. You will get about 300 horsepower, but these turbochargers are not too durable.
The best option is to buy a TRD supercharger kit. It is easily installed on the stock internals and has a stock look. This kit uses a 3.25” size pulley, a maximum boost pressure of approximately 6 psi (0.4 bar). That’s enough to get about 300 HP. This kit will increase the torque throughout the whole range and will almost not reduce the engine resource. The main disadvantage of TRD supercharger kit is its price, it is quite high, however, this is a good choice for your engine.
Also, you can find 1FZ-FE stroker kit. These kits use the crankshaft with 105 mm stroke, H-beam rods, forged pistons, and ACL race bearings. This will increase the engine capacity up to 5 liters. If you install a turbo kit or a supercharger kit, then your LX450 engine will move like a mad locomotive. However, you will have to spend a really really really lot of money. Perhaps, it is better to buy a BMW M5 instead.
