Nissan QG18DE engine reliability, problems and repair

In 1999 QG18DE was produced, and it substituted SR18DE. This engine uses the same cylinder block as QG16DE, but cylinder diameter is enlarged to 80 mm. As for the rest, the engine is the same as QG16. It has the same cylinder head with variable valve timing system N-VCT on intake camshaft and intake manifold with vortex valves.
Every 60,000 miles of mileage (100,000 km) you should regulate the valves on your QG18DE, since it has no hydraulic lifters. This engine uses timing chain. Its life expectancy is not too long, and after about every 100,000 miles of mileage (150,000 km) your car may start jerking and having rough idle. It means it is time to change the chain.
Besides, sometimes the coolant may start leaking through idle control valve gasket. And it is still more unpleasant, that the coolant gets right on ECU. To make the engine working properly, you will need to change idle control valve gasket.
High oil consumption is the peculiarity of QG18DE. Usually it is about 1 qt per 1500 miles (0,5L per 1000 km), but if your engine has exceeded this level, you should turn to the service center.
In general, there is nothing special about this engine, it is typical for such cars. If you take care of it and service in time, then it’s reliable and its lifetime may be more than 200,000 miles of mileage (300,000 km).
Also QG18DD was produced as direct fuel injected version.
Besides QG18, QG series consist of such motors as QG16DE, QG15DE and QG13DE.
QG18DE was discontinued in 2006, but already since 2004 MR18DE started substituting it little by little.

Nissan QG18DE engine problems and malfunctions

Besides the mentioned faults, this engine may also have other problems. You can know more about them HERE.

location of QG18DE engine number

You can find this number on a special place on the right on the cylinder block. This place rusts often, so not always it is possible to see it clearly.

Nissan QG18DE engine tuning

Chip tuning

This engine is not the best choice to turn your Nissan into a drag monster. But if you are wonder to know how to make QG18DE faster, then we will tell you of this. You need to buy headers, performance exhaust system, cold air intake and adjust your ECU. It will add 10 HP to your engine. You will not find any other performance parts for high-rev naturally aspirated QG18DE engine. So in this case the best choice will be purchasing a faster car.
But if you are an eccentric indeed and wish to make exactly your Nissan driving faster, then you will have to build QG18DET. For this buying QG18DE turbo kit is required, and then it is necessary to install it on stock internals. The maximal boost pressure should not exceed 7 psi (0.5 bar), otherwise stock pistons may not bear. This will add about 200 horsepower. To increase the boost pressure and get still more power, you would need to purchase forged pistons, H-beam rods, ARP studs, to make port and polish, etc. It is very irrational and would also reduce the reliability of the engine, making the car unsuitable for everyday driving.
In the upshot, just sell your car and buy 350Z/370Z.
