Nissan HR16DE engine reliability, problems and repair

Nissan HR16DE was developed together with Renault in 2005. In Renault model range it is called H4M and this engine is a substitution of Renault K4M. And in Nissan range, HR16DE replaced QG16DE.
This engine is the same as MR20DE, just the displacement is less. It uses aluminium cylinder block. Piston stroke is 83.6 mm, and cylinder diameter is 78 mm. The form of cylinder is round, to the extent possible, to diminish friction.
Cylinder head has two camshafts and four valves per cylinder. On the intake it uses variable valve timing system CVTC. Hydraulic lifters are absent, therefore every 60,000 miles of mileage (90,000 km) you should regulate the valves on HR16DE. Otherwise, ticking noise will appear.
Camshafts are brought into action thanks to timing chain. It is quite reliable and does not give any trouble.
HR16 is equipped with intake manifold with long runners, what improves low- and mid-range torque. Exhaust system is similar to MR20DE and it has straight design to carry exhaust gas better.
Also it has EGR to return a part of exhaust into the intake system, what improves the ecological index.
The same as MR20DE, HR16DE engine is equipped with brilliant mirror-like polished crankshaft and camshaft journals. Thanks to them friction loss is diminished.
In 2006 the engine was upgraded with new camshafts and two fuel injectors per every cylinder. Also fuel saving increased, it became somewhat more powerful, idle diminished and it became more environment friendly.

Nissan HR16DE engine problems and malfunctions

1. Whistle noise. The problem happens because of alternator belt. Just change it and everything will be all right.
2. The engine stalls. You need to check ignition relay and to change it, if necessary. Otherwise you may cut out on the road and fail to start your car again. Nissan company withdrew the series of cars with such malfunction.
3. Noise. Usually the problem is caused by exhaust pipe flange gasket. You should check it and change, if necessary.
4. Engine vibration. Engine right support has failed. Upon changing it for the new, all will work perfect again.
Besides, HR16DE-H4M starts bad in heavy frost (below 5 F (-15 C)). To make it easier, you can replace the spark plugs with the new, and start the car with help of gas pedal. But such is the peculiarity of the engine, and so it will be impossible to solve the problem completely.
To sum up, HR16DE (H4M) is quite a good engine, reliable and economical, the golden mean. Its lifespan is more than 150,000 miles of mileage (250,000 km), if you use good motor oil and serve the engine regularly.

Engine HR16 is not meant for tuning and it is better even did not try doing it.  However, if you eagerly want it, then buy cold air intake and order header and performance exhaust system to be custom-made for your car. Then you need to install these performance parts and adjust ECU. As the result, it will give about 10 HP and aggressive sound.
