Honda J32A engine reliability, problems and repair

In 1998, a new J-engine was released on the basis of J30A. This engine was named J32A, ant it uses a V6 J30 cylinder block. In this cylinder block, the bore was increased to 89 mm, and the deck height was left unchanged at 235 mm. The length of piston rods was of 162 mm, and the compression height of the piston was 30 mm. All this allowed to add extra 200 cm3 of displacement, and get the total of 3.2 liter.
Two 12-valve SOHC heads with a VTEC system are used here. The diameter of the exhaust valves was increased to 30 mm, and the intake valves – to 34 mm. New intake and exhaust manifolds were used for J32A.
This engine uses a timing belt; it is to be replaced after every 60,000 miles.
Valve are to be adjusted after every 25,000 to 30,000 miles. Valve clearances (for cold engine) are: intake 0.2-0.24 mm, exhaust 0.28-0.32 mm.
The fuel injectors size is 240 cc/min. The throttle body diameter is 64 mm. The Honda J32 firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6.
Along with J32A, other J-series engines were made: J25, J30, J35 and J37.
In 2008, production J32A stopped and it was replaced by a 3.5-liter J35.

Acura J32A engine modifications and differences

1. J32A1 is the first version of J32. This engine has the compression ratio of 9.8, and the VTEC system is triggered after 3,500 rpm. Its power was 225 HP 5,500 rpm, the torque was 264 Nm 4,800 rpm. Such an engine was installed under the hood of Honda Inspire, Acura TL and Acura CL.
2. J32A2 is different from J32A1 by new pistons (compression ratio 10.5), it heads flow is better, J32A Type S cams are more aggressive and are the most sporty of all J-engines camshafts. Here the VTEC system is used that is triggered after 4,800 rpm. A modified 2-Stage intake manifold is used that is triggered after 3,800 rpm. They installed an increased 68 mm throttle body, 36 mm intake valves, stiffer valve springs, and a sportier exhaust system.
As a result of these improvements, the power of J32A2 increased to 260 HP 6,100 rpm and torque was 314 Nm 3,500 rpm.
This engine was created for Acura CL Type S and Acura TL Type S.
3. J32A3 is an improved version of the J32A2, but its head was created on the basis of J32A1 head. The compression ratio was increased to 11, a cold air intake system is used, as well as a 2-Stage intake manifold (triggered after 4,000 rpm), 35 mm intake valves, a new exhaust manifold, and a modified exhaust system. The VTEC switches after 4,700 rpm. Data upgrades added a little power and J32A3 boasts 270 HP 6200 rpm, the torque is 323 Nm 5000 rpm.
You can find this engine in a 3rd generation Acura TL V6.

Acura J32A engine problems and malfunctions

This engine is very similar to J30A, and their problems are very similar. HERE you can read more about it.

Honda J32A engine tuning

You can make your J32A go faster, but you will need some performance parts. Buy a J37A intake manifold or leave a stock one, but your manifold will need porting. You will also need an aftermarket 80 mm throttle body or a ported OEM throttle body.
You will need J35A3 heads, this is the best solution. If you have a J32A2 engine, then leave the OEM cylinder head, they are almost as good. You will also need J32A2 cams, these are the best of all stock cams. But you can use good aftermarket cams as well.
Head porting will significantly improve the engine performance, but you will need valve springs, KMS valves and valve retainers, as well as headers and a good 2.5 inch performance exhaust system. You will have to configure the ECU, and all these mods will give you over 300 HP at the flywheel.
You can get even more power, but you will need a 3.6 l stroker kit. Such a stroker kit consists of a J37A1 crank, J37A1 rods and J35A8 pistons.
You can get the maximum power, if you build a J32A Turbo using stock internals. The J32A engine will withstand 7 psi (0.5 bar) of boost and 400+ HP, and even more after good tuning. However, for the sake of reliability, it is better to use forged pistons and rods.
