Honda F23A engine reliability, problems and repair

This is the largest engine of all Honda F-series, which was released in 1997 and was named F23A. It was developed based on F22A open deck cylinder block, but the cylinder bore was increased to 86 mm. A 97 mm crankshaft was also installed into the block. The cylinder block deck height remained unchanged – 219.5 mm; it contains two balancer shafts. To fit the new crankshaft into the old block, shortened rods with the length of 141 mm were used for F23A, and lightweight pistons with reduced compression height of 30 mm. That was enough to get 2.3-liter displacement.
For the F23A engine, VTEC SOHC 16 valve head was used. The valve diameter remained the same as in F22A: 34 mm intake valves and 29 mm exhaust valves. The camshaft is rotated by the timing belt, and its replacement is required after every 60,000 miles. When the timing belt breaks, valves in the engine get bent.
The valves are to be adjusted after every 25,000-30,000 miles. Valve clearances for a cold engine are as follows: intake valves 0.23-0.27 mm, exhaust valves 0.27-0.33 mm.
The stock F23A injectors size is 240 cc/min.
The firing order on this engine is 1-3-4-2.
This engine is one of the representatives of the Honda F-series, which included engines like F18, F20, F20C, F22 and F22C. Honda also released another very similar H series of engines, which included the H22 and H23.
The Honda F23A engine was installed until 2003, then it was replaced with a more modern 2.4-liter K24A.

Honda F23A engine modifications and differences

1. F23A1 was a typical engine with a VTEC system and the compression ratio of 9.3. Its power was 152 HP 5,700 rpm, the torque was 205 Nm 4,900 rpm. Such an engine was installed in Honda Accord and Acura CL.
2. F23A4 was an analogue to F23A1, but oriented to higher environmental standards. This motor had modified intake and exhaust manifolds, and a different ECU. This reduced the power to 150 HP 5,700 rpm, the torque was 203 Nm 4,000 rpm. You can buy a Honda Accord with an F23A4.
3. F23A5 – in this version, non-VTEC SOHC head was used, with compression ratio reduced to 8.8. It affected power, it dropped to 135 HP 5,500 rpm and the torque of 206 Nm 4,500 rpm. This engine was intended for Honda Accord.
4. F23A7 is an analogue of F23A1 for Honda Odyssey and Isuzu Oasis.

Honda F23A engine problems and malfunctions

This motor, like any other F-engine, was very similar to Honda H22A and H23A. These motors had the same problems described HERE.
However, F23A had its own problem, misfiring. The reason is the EGR valve, check it out.

Honda F23A engine tuning

To increase the power up to 200-210 BHP, you don’t need any performance parts, it is sufficient to buy a F22A head and install it on the F23A block. Next you will need the same mods as for F22. Detailed description is available HERE.
You can also increase the compression ratio to 12.3, if you install high compression pistons (K20A2 pistons), while everything else will remain stock.
